False Monochromes

A Hue by Any Other Name…

Many of the faces in this series were inspired by studies made from historical bust portraits in museums in the United States and Poland.   In each, a genuine attempt was made to recreate each as a living portrait within a dominate color scheme which initially appears to be a monochrome.  A true monochrome is made with a single pigment, plus black and white. In this series, a full palette is used in each painting and a wide range of pigments are used to expand each hue within a limited value range.  As a whole, the work questions personness at the same time it acts as a rather formal study of hue, value, and chroma in the spirit of Josef Albers. Recent titles reference the perceived hues and older titles are in Polish, hinting that things are not quite what they seem.
